L'héritier d'OIeg Blokhine, le mythique attaquant du Dynamo Kiev des années soixante-dix, a eu une enfance qui aurait pu être tragique. Né dans le petit village de Dvirkivchtchyna, il doit quitter précipitamment la maison de son enfance à l'âge de 10 ans. À quelques kilomètres de là, un des réacteurs de la centrale nucléaire de Tchernobyl vient d'exploser et tous les habitants de la zone doivent être évacués. Il ne sera pas contaminé, mais son enfance sera brisée par cet événement. Heureusement, il y a le football. Repéré dès l'âge de 9 ans, il intègre le centre de formation du Dynamo Kiev quelques semaines après la catastrophe qui aurait pu lui coûter la vie. Protégé par les dirigeants qui ont décelé tout son talent, il fait son apprentissage dans les équipes déjeunes. Le 20 octobre 1984, à 18 ans, il fait sa première apparition en équipe première. 
Il va remporter cinq titres de champion d'Ukraine avec le Dynamo, entre 1995 et 1999, tout en s'imposant dans l'équipe nationale ukrainienne. Lors de la saison 1997-i 998, il éclate aux yeux du monde en marquant un triplé au Barça dans son antre du Camp Nou. Entraîné par l'emblématique technicien ukrainien Victor Lobanovski, l'attaquant devient tout simplement irrésistible. Rapide, doté d'une excellente frappe de balle des deux pieds et capable de se démarquer dans les défenses les plus hermétiques, Chevtchenko sent que le championnat ukrainien est trop petit pour son talent. Après un an d'âpres négociations, il rejoint le Milan AC durant l'été 1999, pour une somme de 20 millions d'euros. Dès son premier match en Série A, le 28 août, il inscrit son premier but et remporte le titre de meilleur buteur du championnat à la fin de la saison. Il devient très vite l'un des meilleurs attaquants européens. En revanche, avec son équipe nationale, il ne parvient pas à se qualifier pour les grandes compétitions. En 2003, il bat la JuventusTurin, en finale de Champions League. L'année suivante sera celle du sacre : il va gagner le Calcio, la Super Coupe d'Italie, le titre de meilleur buteur du championnat et surtout le Ballon d'Or France Football qui le consacre meilleur footballeur européen.
Pourtant, au fil des saisons, Andreï Chevtchenko prend moins de plaisir au Milan et souhaite goûter aux joies du football anglais. Roman Abramovitch, le milliardaire russe, propriétaire de Chelsea ami personnel, en a fait une de ses priorités. En mai 2006, il signe un contrat avec le club londonien contre la somme astronomique de 45 millions d'euros. Un mois plus tard, il est à la Coupe du monde en Allemagne où il parvient à hisser son équipe en quarts de finale, un exploit pour ce tout jeune pays. Mais à Chelsea, la sauce ne prendra jamais et Chevtchenko ne sera que l'ombre de lui-même. Deux ans plus tard, durant l'été 2008, las de cirer le banc de touche, il quitte Londres pour revenir à Milan. Durant la saison 2008-2009, il participera à 18 matchs mais, chose incroyable pour un joueur de ce talent, il ne marquera aucun but! Il retrouve alors le Dynamo Kiev avec lequel il va inscrire de très jolis buts durant la saison 2009-201 o. À 33 ans, «Cheva » n'a toujours pas dit son dernier mot...

In 1999, Shevchenko joined Italian club A.C. Milan for a then-record transfer fee of $25 million. He made his Serie A debut on 28 August 1999 in a 2–2 draw with Lecce. He became the first foreign player to win the Serie A scoring title in his debut season, finishing with 24 goals in 32 matches. Shevchenko maintained his excellent form into 2000-01 season, scoring 24 goals in 34 matches. Andriy also managed to score 9 goals in 14 matches in the Champions League, however Milan failed to get past the second group stage. Despite netting only five times in 24 matches, mainly due to injuries, Shevchenko became the first Ukrainian-born player to win the Champions League after Milan lifted their sixth trophy in 2002–03. He scored the winning penalty in the shoot out against arch-rivals Juventus in the final, which had ended goalless after extra time. He finished top goalscorer in Serie A (2003–04) for the second time in his career, scoring 24 goals in 32 matches as Milan won the Scudetto for the first time in four years. He also scored the winning goal in the UEFA Super Cup victory over F.C. Porto, leading to Milan's second trophy of the season. In August 2004, he scored three goals against S.S. Lazio as Milan won the Italian Super Cup. Shevchenko capped off the year by being named the 2004 European Player of the Year, becoming the third Ukrainian player ever to win the award after Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov. In the same year, Shevchenko was also inducted into the FIFA 100.He scored seventeen goals in the 2004–05 season after missing several games with a fractured cheekbone. Shevchenko made Champions League history the following season; on 23 November 2005, he scored all four goals in Milan's 4–0 group-stage drubbing of Fenerbahçe, becoming only the fifth player to accomplish this feat. Milan eventually lost the tournament when Shevchenko missed the crucial penalty in the final against Liverpool. In the 2005-06 season, he scored his last Milan goal in the second leg of the quarterfinals as they eliminated Olympique Lyonnais after a last-minute comeback, but then fell to eventual winners Barcelona in the semifinals, a match where Shevchenko controversially had a last minute equalizer denied by the referee. Despite this, he still ended up being the top scorer of the whole competition with 9 goals in 12 games. On 8 February 2006, he became Milan's second highest all-time goalscorer, behind Gunnar Nordahl, after netting against Treviso. He finished the season as joint 4th top scorer with 19 goals in 28 games. Shevchenko ended his seven year stint with A.C. Milan with 173 goals in 296 games.
